Žiga Vrhunec

Senior Engineer

Žiga is an offshore structural engineer with experience gained across the offshore renewables sector.

About Žiga Vrhunec

Žiga has six years of experience in designing and building floating structures and station keeping systems with significant contributions to innovative technology development.

Early career

Žiga’s origins trace back to Slovenia, where a passion for the outdoors and hands-on craftsmanship sparked his deep interest in engineering. Seeking to enhance his academic prowess, he ventured to Scotland to pursue mechanical engineering studies. Alongside his degree, he embarked on multiple summer placements back in Slovenia, honing his skills in working with steel.

Professional Experience

Following his graduation, Žiga delved into the world of offshore renewables, securing a role with Quoceant where he had the privilege to work on cutting-edge technologies. As a structural engineer, he contributed to the design and analysis of an array of offshore renewable projects spanning wave, wind, and tidal devices.

Žiga also has hands-on experience designing station-keeping systems, including anchors and mooring components. Notably, he played an integral role in an in-house initiative, assisting in the creation and refinement of a sophisticated electro-mechanical mooring system.

Later, Žiga joined the Black & Veatch marine team. There, as an offshore wind engineer, he worked alongside a leading floating offshore wind developer, contributing to the development and certification of a pioneering floating offshore wind foundation.

Why offshore wind?

“It presents intricate engineering and logistical challenges, especially as we continue to push the boundaries by installing larger turbines and foundations in deeper waters. I see this as a playground of innovation and problem-solving, offering unparalleled opportunities to shape the future of de-carbonising our energy supply.”

Specialist Areas

Structural design, finite element analysis, novel technology, threat assessment, project management.
